The Future of Poverty
What will become of it in the following years?
In the past century, has the amount of people living in poverty increased/decreased?
Claim: In the past century, the support given to those in poverty has helped to reduce the amount of people living in poverty. However, there is still more work to do, as there are still many people suffering from poverty.
Evidence:
"Fifty years ago, in January of 1964, President Lyndon B. Johnson declared a 'War on Poverty' and introduced initiatives designed to improve the education, health, skills, jobs, and access to economic resources of those struggling to make ends meet."
"Poverty has declined by more than one-third since 1967."
(Arloc Sherman, September 2013)
"Despite real progress in the War on Poverty, there is more work to do."
(WhiteHouse, January 2014)
